Smerdon, D. - van Putten, H.
LSG2 - Utrecht, 12/15/2007

Round 5 [Smerdon, David]

To be honest, this game wasn't really that good, and there were a few others in the match that really should have been annotated instead of this. However, as it was my last game for Utrecht, I'm going to include it anyway.
1.e4 g6 2.d4 d6 3.Pc3 Lg7 4.Le3 a6 5.Dd2 I don't really understand the Modern, to be honest. Black says, "Hey, I'll refuse to develop for as long as possible, give you the centre, and pretty much force you to attack me as soon as possible." Deal.
5...Pd7 6.h4 h5 7.Ph3 I have a really good score with this idea. The knight on g5 always covers the weak e4 pawn, as well as allowing for a bunch of tactics on the e5 and f7 squares.
7...b5 8.Pg5 Lb7 9.a4 c6
[9...b4 10.Lc4! e6 11.Pe2
(11.Lxe6 is too early:
11...fxe6 12.Pxe6 bxc3 13.Dxc3 De7 14.Pxc7+ Kf8 15.Pxa8 Lxa8 16.f3 Kf7)
11...Pgf6 12.Lxe6! Now it's time to get your freak on.
12...fxe6 13.Pxe6 De7 14.Pxc7+ Kf7 15.Pxa8 Dxe4 16.Dxb4 Lxa8]
10.f4! First played by my good mate Tom Rendle, who is equally aggressive at snooker.
[Sokolov tried
10.Td1 , Timofeev tried 10.f3?! and Zhigalko tried 10.Bd3, but all of these moves are inferior.]
10...Ph6
[10...e6?! was played in the stem game.
11.f5 gxf5 12.exf5 De7 13.fxe6 fxe6 14.axb5 cxb5 15.Ld3 O-O-O 16.O-O Pgf6 17.d5 exd5 18.Lf5 Lh6 19.Pxb5 Pe4 20.Lxe4 axb5 21.Tf7 De5 22.Ld4 Dg3 23.Tf3 Dxh4 24.Dc3+ Pc5 25.Lxc5 Lxg5 26.Lxd6+ Kd7 27.Dc7+ 1-0 Rendle,T (2370)-Black,R (2235)/Caleta 2005/CBM 104 ext]

11.e5!? Forward is the only way.

[13.f5!? gxf5 14.Le2 Pxe6 15.Pxe6 fxe6 16.Lxh5+ Pf7 17.Lg6 is also interesting.]
13...Pxf7 14.Pxf7 Kxf7 15.g4? Too much testosterone.
[15.Le2]
15...hxg4 16.Le2 Dd7 17.O-O-O Ph7 18.Tdg1 Pf6 19.Pd1 Otherwise, black is just a pawn up.
19...Lc8
[19...Pe4!?]
[19...bxa4! 20.Pf2 a3! 21.bxa3 c5! was a tough sequence to see.]
20.Pf2 Dd6 21.Pd3!?
[21.Lxg4 Pxg4 22.Pxg4 Lxg4 23.Txg4 Lf6 looks pretty boring.]
21...Pe4 22.Da5 Dd8
[22...g3 had be worried. I don't think white has enough:
23.Pe5+ Lxe5 24.dxe5 De6 25.h5 Ld7!]
23.Dxd8 Txd8 24.Lxg4 Lxg4 25.Txg4 Maybe black can hold, but there's weak foot soldiers on both sides of the table.

32.Pxc4 Lxd4 33.Pb6

33...Th8 34.Pxd5?! Oh, what a high quality game.
